This is a complicated question and only you can really answer this as we do not know your needs. You can go with a hosted platform which means you don't need to purchase software to create a store, but you do not have control over the code of the shopping cart which can lead to problems later. You can purchase a license for software and install it on your hosting server. To start out, you should look into os commerce or magento as they are open source and free so you can test the waters of selling online.
